REUNIR Video Series – What is the key challenge facing the EU’s support policies for its candidate countries?

In our next video, Nikola Dimitrov shares valuable insights on a key question:

What is the key challenge facing the EU’s support policies for its candidate countries?

The process is compromised by the possibility to block it at every step, undermining the merit-based nature of accession. According to Nikola Dimitrov, to ensure progress, conditionality must be consistent: countries moving forward must be recognized, while those that backslide should face consequences. The current use of vetoes needs addressing, perhaps through qualified majority voting in enlargement stages or handling bilateral issues separately. It’s impossible to align open vetoes with a truly merit-based process.
