REUNIR Mid-term Conference in Belgrade – Vuk Vuksanovic, BSCP

Next REUNIR video from our 1st mid-term conference features Dr. Vuk Vuksanović, Senior Researcher at Belgrade Centre for Security Policy answering the key question:

How do you assess the resilience of Serbia in the face of malign foreign interference and its ability to stay the course to EU membership?

Serbia today is a striking example of how geopolitical neglect can open space for alternative power dynamics. While Western actors maintain a presence, Serbia has increasingly welcomed influence from Russia, China, Turkey, and less-discussed players like Azerbaijan, the UAE, and Israel.

This growing vacuum has enabled local elites often tied to corruption and authoritarian practices to pursue a multi-vector foreign policy. By balancing Western and non-Western interests, Serbia’s leadership maximizes external support while sidestepping meaningful democratic reform. It’s a strategy that raises pressing questions about long-term stability and the EU’s role in the region.
