REUNIR Mid-term Conference in Tbilisi – Florian Bieber, University of Graz

REUNIR Project | Expert Insights Series, 2nd Mid-Term Conference Highlights

We’re sharing expert interviews recorded at our 2nd Mid-Term Conference in Tbilisi, Georgia. In our first video, Florian Bieber, Professor of Southeast European History and Politics at the University of Graz, answers the question:

What lessons from the Western Balkans can be applied to the EU’s approach toward its Eastern neighbours?

Professor Florian Bieber explains that the Western Balkans show how joining the EU can be a very long and difficult process. Countries need strong and lasting support at home for EU membership, so reforms don’t lose momentum. He also highlights that convincing EU member states is essential, since their support often decides whether enlargement moves forward.

These lessons are important for Eastern Partnership countries to avoid frustration and delays. Watch the full video to hear his expert insights.
