REUNIR Project | Expert Insights Series, 2nd Mid-Term Conference Highlights
We’re sharing expert interviews recorded at our 2nd Mid-Term Conference in Tbilisi, Georgia. In this video, Prof. Dr. Hylke Dijkstra, Full Professor of International Security and Cooperation at Maastricht University, answers the question:
What’s the biggest challenge for aligning EU strategies with the realities of candidate countries?
He explains that EU policies toward the Eastern neighbourhood and Western Balkans are often seen only through the narrow lens of enlargement – focused on whether a country will become a member or not. In today’s complex geopolitical environment, he argues there is a need for more creative thinking about these relationships.
Prof. Dijkstra calls for Brussels and EU policymakers to develop a broader range of options to build stronger and more flexible partnerships with countries like Georgia, Serbia, and Kosovo.
